Netherite Ingot Field Guide
The hardest gear tier in the game — and a smithing-table puzzle to assemble.
What is Netherite Ingot?
A netherite ingot is the end-game upgrade material used to convert diamond gear into netherite gear. Netherite tools are 25% more durable than diamond, deal slightly more damage, and — critically — float in lava and never burn, making them the only equipment safe to drop in the Nether. The ingot itself does not craft armour or tools directly: it is consumed inside a smithing table along with a netherite upgrade smithing template to upgrade an existing diamond piece, which keeps any enchantments on the upgraded item.
How to obtain it
A single netherite ingot requires four netherite scrap and four gold ingots, combined in a crafting grid. Netherite scrap is smelted from ancient debris, which spawns naturally only in the Nether between Y=8 and Y=22 (peak distribution at Y=15). Ancient debris is blast resistant and ignores explosions, which is exactly why bed mining and TNT mining are the dominant farming techniques. Each ingot therefore represents four ancient debris blocks — typically 30–60 minutes of dedicated mining per ingot. The netherite upgrade smithing template needed for the smithing-table recipe drops from chests in bastion remnants (10% per chest) and can be duplicated using diamonds and netherrack.
What to use it for
Netherite ingots upgrade every diamond tool, weapon, and armour piece in the game. The smithing recipe is one diamond piece + one netherite ingot + one netherite upgrade smithing template, and the resulting netherite item retains every enchantment, durability point, and name change from the original. Beyond gear, netherite ingots craft a single block of netherite (used as a lodestone ingredient) and are accepted by piglins as occasional barter input.
Tips, tricks & common mistakes
- ▸Mine ancient debris with bed explosions in the Nether — beds detonate when used outside the Overworld and ignore ancient debris's blast resistance.
- ▸Always carry a fire-resistance potion when mining for ancient debris. A single misclick into lava without it ends the trip.
- ▸Upgrade your pickaxe to netherite first. Mending plus an Efficiency V netherite pickaxe is the most repair-efficient mining loadout in the game.
- ▸Store netherite gear in chests, not on your hotbar in the Overworld — the lava-immunity benefit only matters in the Nether or near lava lakes.
- ▸Save your netherite upgrade templates: the duplication recipe costs seven diamonds plus a netherrack block per copy, so plan upgrades in batches.
Where this fits in your progression
Netherite is the late-game endpoint of the [diamond](/items/diamond) progression. Bring a [diamond pickaxe](/items/diamond-pickaxe) and several beds to the [Nether](/biomes/nether-wastes) to start mining [ancient debris](/blocks/ancient-debris). Once you have netherite gear, the next major progression milestone is the [End](/biomes/the-end) and the [ender dragon](/mobs/ender-dragon).
